Speak Up, Speak Out: Breaking the Silence on Teen Dating Violence

February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM), a time dedicated to shining a light on the often-overlooked issue of dating violence among young people. At Wave of Unity, we believe in the power of awareness, education, and action to create safer, healthier relationships for teens everywhere.

Why This Matters

Teen dating violence is more common than many realize. According to research, 1 in 3 teens will experience some form of physical, emotional, or psychological abuse in a dating relationship before they even graduate high school. Despite this alarming statistic, many victims suffer in silence, unsure of where to turn for support.

This month, we are dedicated to empowering teens, educating parents, and engaging schools and communities in meaningful conversations about healthy relationships, red flags, and how to support those in need.

Recognizing the Warning Signs

Dating abuse isn’t always physical—it can also take the form of emotional manipulation, digital harassment, or controlling behavior. Some key warning signs include:✔️ Extreme jealousy or possessiveness✔️ Constant monitoring of social media and texts✔️ Isolation from friends and family✔️ Verbal threats, insults, or humiliation✔️ Unexplained bruises or injuries✔️ Pressuring for sexual activity or ignoring consent

If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these behaviors, you are not alone. Help is available.

How You Can Get Involved

At Wave of Unity, we are taking action this February with our "Speak Up, Speak Out" campaign, designed to raise awareness, provide resources, and encourage open dialogue. Here’s how you can be part of the movement:

💜 Join the Conversation: Follow our social media campaign, share survivor stories, and use the hashtag #SpeakUpSpeakOut to spread awareness.

💜 Educate & Advocate: Talk to the teens in your life about healthy relationships, boundaries, and respect. Encourage schools to incorporate awareness programs.

💜 Attend Our virtual Community Event: Stay tuned for details about our virtual Speak Up, Speak Out Community Awareness Event on February 28th, featuring guest speakers, panel discussions, and resources for youth and parents.

💜 Seek Help & Offer Support: If you or someone you know needs support, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-SAFE (7233) or visit loveisrespect.org for confidential resources.

Together, We Can Make a Difference

Teen dating violence is preventable—but it starts with awareness, education, and action. By speaking up, advocating for change, and supporting survivors, we can create a culture where love is safe, respectful, and empowering.

💜 Let’s work together to break the cycle of abuse and build a future where every teen feels valued, heard, and protected. 💜

Stay connected with Wave of Unity for more updates, resources, and opportunities to get involved!
